Ok, it is ASK, not "axe". It sounds really...REALLY dumb when you say "I axed him a question." It makes you sound like a complete dumbass.

If I could "me too" this a million and one times I would. Add exspecially to that too.

Add "irregardless".

Anonymous said:

Oh hell yeah!

Can we also add "would of" to the list? It's would have!

Anonymous said:

Or when someone needs to take their "AM-inals" to the vet.
And take their kids to the BAF-room.
And buy candy for valen-TIMES-day.

And EXPECIALLY when they AXE someone a question!

Anonymous said:

Oh, and I hate when people say "BRANG".

There is no such word as brang. It's brought. As in: I BROUGHT my kids to school".. not "I brang my kids to school!"

Anonymous said:

"Can we also add "would of" to the list? It's would have!"

Um. No it's not 'would of'. Try would've.

Uh, yeah sweety, that was the point of the post. lol. Would've = would have. It's this little thing called a contraction. Would've doesn't = would of. Hence my comment. Maybe you just didn't understand.

Anonymous said:

How about: "what do you want to DRANK?" "can i borrow an umerella?," Whatchu doing this weekend?" and my all time favorite... "I seen it!"

Anonymous said:

dont forget pacifically, and supposubly!!!

Anonymous said:

I agree with all of these. Isn't it ironic how we as a society are yelling at those who immigrate here (legally or illegally) to speak English if you're going to be in America, but yet we've got so many American-born citizens just slaughtering the English language? These are all like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. If someone were to 'axe' me a question? I'd be standing WAY back!

Anonymous said:

Ohhhh yessssss!!!!

"Yous" drives me insane too!

Anonymous said:

Some people have thicker accents than other depending on where you are from. Some people use abreviations and dont feel the need to speak proper and articulate as each syllable comes out. Some people like the way they talk and oh my God guess what? SOME PEOPLE ACTUALLY DONT GIVE A SHIT IF YOUR UNHAPPY WITH HOW THEY SPEAK.

Anonymous said:

"Would've doesn't = would of."

Right, which is why I said that. You said that 'Would have' doesn't = would of. But it turn it was the contraction you meant to write. We're going by PRONOUNCIATION, not spelling. So yeah, even though it was right, because that's not the meaning, you still should have had the contraction in there, not the typed out, long, real word.

Anonymous said:

"SOME PEOPLE ACTUALLY DONT GIVE A SHIT IF YOUR UNHAPPY WITH HOW THEY SPEAK."

That's good then, because if you speak like that then most other people are just going to think you are uneducated and stupid. But I suppose if you "don't give a shit" then it doesn't matter. Good luck with that!

Anonymous said:

Woah, number 12. We aren't talking about speech and accents. We're talking about regular english speaking people who know the correct way to pronounce a word but don't. It makes them look childish because that's the way children say it, when they don't any know better. Hence the example of:

"axe a question"
"going to the baf-room"
"valen-times day"
"expecially"
"AMinal".

Anonymous said:

No it was would have I meant to write. Would have and would've are the same thing.

Oh please, you just didn't understand and are trying to backtrack since you got called out. The rest of us just figured YOU were the one who screwed up.

May as well add "warsh" to the list. I'm sorry, there is no such place as Warshington State nor is there such a place as Warshington, DC.

Oh, it's also espresso, NOT expresso.

How about "I could have went" instead of "I could have gone"?

I swear, every time we're at a stop sign, my husband says "Aw man, I could have went if that guy would hurry up!" or something like that. For five years, I have been correcting him, but it doesn't stick. LOL It's become a joke.

In all fairness, English is his second language, so I guess he gets a free one! LOL

Anonymous said:

"Oh for the love of god would have and would've are the SAME THING! Why are you arguing with her?"

Yes, I see it too. The one who wrote the third comment used the wrong term. When it's said, they aren't using "would of". But it sounds that way because thats also how you say "would've".

Pay attention to what people post. You will SEE "would of" instead of "would have" or "would've".

Anonymous said:

I understand exactly what you are saying. Just remember that some may actually hear it that way and don't know unless they are told. I know that I do that. I am Deaf, 27, and still learning how to say words right. I don't want to sound uneducated so I try hard to say it right.

Of course you don't. You also don't see me rolling my eyes at you.

Yes, "would've" and "would of" sound the same when spoken. There's no arguing that.

HOWEVER, if you know someone who types "would of", you know they SAY it too. It's just as annoying.

This seems to be a racially motivated thread to me.

Anonymous said:

I don't think it's racially motivated. I've heard people of every single race say "I seen..." (instead of "I saw"), and the things like "broughten", "brung", and the others, I don't think they're racial at all. Now "Axe", I've heard more black people say, but I have also heard some white people say it, and I've known far more black people who DO NOT say it than ones who do.

Plus, we don't know what race the OP is.

Anonymous said:

"This seems to be a racially motivated thread to me."

What?! Are you serious? Where in the world would you get that? People of all races speak incorrectly.

Anonymous said:

Why is everything "racially motivated" these days. For crying out loud, I think its just as racist to play the race card as to be traditionally racist.

Anonymous said:

It must be a southern thing. I never heard "axed" until I moved south. I heard it yesterday and thought to myself "how uneducated that sounds".

Anonymous said:

"Why is everything "racially motivated" these days. For crying out loud, I think its just as racist to play the race card as to be traditionally racist."

Good call. I know many didn't see eye to eye on the whole 'would of', 'would've' thing. But this. You hit right on the head.

Anonymous said:

wow. i think i just killed some brain cells reading all these responses! LOL

Anonymous said:

Some people have thick accents, also some people have speech impediments. I am from the south, and thats how it is. Doesn't qualify you as uneducated, its where you were raised. I say ain't and y'all, and you know what thats who I am. I am proud of it. I do think that spelling can be show someone that you are uneducated. I know I don't speak or write very well, but some one who can better then me doesn't make them smarter. I know people who may be smarter then me, but I know things they don't. Also back to the impediments, my husband has some and its more to do with his teeth but he cant get it fixed. So if you don't know someones situation then don't judge them. I am sorry I would rather be southern with some values and morals, then not be and just be able to write and speak well.

Anonymous said:

I speak differntly on purpose so that I do not have to sound like the man.

Anonymous said:

Im fixen to tell all of yall, to get a life lol yes I said fixen to so bite my ass! :D
Its a southern thing you wouldn't understand, by the way I was really good in English class, but that doesnt mean I don't have an accent I do and I use it :D

Anonymous said:

"I am sorry I would rather be southern with some values and morals, then not be and just be able to write and speak well."

Huh? What does that have to do with anything?

Im just saying people bash me for being southern and how I talk and well thats who I am. I have met some people who may have had schooling for reading and writing, but school cant teach you to respect people and to have values. I would rather have that, then perfect English.

Anonymous said:

I'm Southern, I write and read very well, but I have to say its not WHERE I was raised that gave me morals and values, but HOW I was raised. People are immoral everywhere, not just Yankee-land, and by implying that being Southern is what makes you moral, you actually give off the impression that you are an idiot.

Anonymous said:

I am saying I think I have more values and morals then some people I have met. I live in California now, and people here are down right rude. I am not saying southern as in, where I live. Thats not what makes you southern, what makes you southern is how you are raised. ( I agree with you, as you can see I didn't portray that right) I was raised with "yes ma'am", "no ma'am", "yes sir" and "no sir", with a "please" and "thank you". I am just saying I would rather associate myself with people who respect me, then people who can tell me off with perfect English. Thats all I was saying.

Anonymous said:

I think the way we speak english is changing and people might as well get used to it. For those who don't like it, then you know how they felt when we went from old english to modern english. It is going to change and evolve just like everything else in life.

Ok adding my two cents it is Kindergarten not Kinneygarden.

Call people "ma'am" and "sir" and saying "please" and "thank you" means you have manners. Has nothing to do with values and morals.

Anonymous said:

i love how this has gone from pet peeve words, to arguing about wouldve and would of, to arguing about being racist, to arguing about being southern. wow.

Anonymous said:

I was under the impression that what makes you Southern IS actually being from the South. Having manners doesn't make you Southern. Being from the South does.

Anonymous said:

I hate it when people juge. Maybe this person has a speech impediment or "ask" is a hard word for her to say. Everyone has at least one word they have trouble with and it has nothing to do with race or education.

Anonymous said:

May I also add "tooken" to the list?

I'm a Texan and I say "fixin'" but I don't know why you are acting like people from the south have to sounds like uneducated idiots. Right now I'm in Alabama so LOTS of heavy accents. It's not the accents that make someone seem dumber than a bump on a log, it's their grammer and the things they talk about.

I freaking HATE HATE HATE when people say the terms "Good Gravy" and "Anywho".

Huh? Manners are a "southern" thing only? Southern IS WHERE you are from NOT how you are raised. I'm kind of understanding the uneducated thing lol. Wow!

"Yous" drives me insane too!

My MIL and dh both say "Yous", and it drives me insane. My husband only says it that way because of MIL. My SIL and the rest of MIL's sibling's/family do not say "Yous". I'm still trying to figure out where MIL picked up "Yous".

"Can you 'warsh' my clothes???"
WHAT?!?!?

My grandparents are from the south and they have always said "Warsh" as well as my great aunts and uncles.

Anonymous said:

one of my daughters says "axe" instead of "ask" all the time. Drives me frakkin batty. I am constantly correcting her, but want to hear the sad part? I am pretty sure she learned to say "Axe" from her teacher. sigh

Anonymous said:

This is so petty. Maybe these people have speech impediments.

Anonymous said:

This is sad... your making fun of people, and it's sad. Some have accents (as in "warsh"- that's how it's said to many elders in the south), some have impediments, and some were probably raised without proper education due to the poverty level (and uneven distribution between the classes/ethnicities), and so on! GROW UP!!!

Anonymous said:

YALL are pathetic, because alot of these words are specific to certain areas of the US, cultures, age groups, etc. So yeah, this post and (some) of it's comments do seem ignorant and intolerant of others. People, just because you don't understand everything everyone does (and says) doesn't make it wrong. Your not the holder of the English language! Surprise!!! Languages grow, evolve, and change over time... especially between regions, classes, and ages. Accept it and move on.

Anonymous said:

As a southern black woman with a speech impediment, I am so offended by this entire comment page.

Anonymous said:

You all would hate me! My accent is kinda thick and I don't have good grammar skills when I speak! lol.. Good thing I have my degree in Comm so I can balance it when I need to. We're not stupid. If you wanna start talking about how people say shit...I know you're not perfect either.

Anonymous said:

With everything going on in the world right now it's nice to know that people can focus all their energy on... complaining about petty grammar mistakes WHILE unintentionally misspelling words. LOL

Anonymous said:

It's not as bad as some of the other things people say...example...I went to the store and I like ran into my friend for like kindergaten and it was totally crazy! The over useage of "like" and "totally" bug me!

Anonymous said:

It's called Sociolinguistics people! The fact that some of you judge the uneducated for the way they speak is yet another way to stratify our society into the haves and the have-nots. Why place blame on those who had poor education--what about holding our government education systems responsible?

Anonymous said:

Augh, I just saw someone else say "I seen you at such and such." I want to scream!!!!!!

Anonymous said:

I'm southern and it drives me crazy to hear people constantly butcher the English language... The education system down here is horrible and the teachers are just trying to get the kids to pass, which unfortunently doesn't include having to spell or write correctly. It's a SHAME and it's annoying to hear. I am embarrassed that people associate poor education with the South, although I totally see why. :(
