Sarah Palin for VP? - Many are cheering for another woman taking center stage, and many are worried that this is a woman who's been promoted for the wrong reasons and is going to be blamed when things don't go right.

If someone has in at least 10 years and then gets out, I think they're being stupid. I won't say anything to them unless they ask my opion (not my place). But I told my husband, if he hits that ten year mark, he's halfway to retirment and he needs to stay in. He COMPLETELY agrees with me. And I'm doing the same. We both think it's stupid to be so close to retirment. How many other jobs offer a retirment check after only 20 years? And you're still young enough to start another career! Okay, I feel better getting it off my chest.

Agreed. They've gone that far, why not finish it out. Full retirement/benefits.. not many places can offer that. If you started when you were 18... retire in 20.. you're 38! Who do you know in the civilian world that retires at 38?!

i completely agree.

I know a lot of people have different circumstances that would actually make it a good decision to get out, but for our family I agree completely. The rule in our world is after 10 years he's locked in for good.

DH just did 20, and got out. But the people we know who got out earlier went on to make MAJOR MAJOR bucks and I don't blame them one bit. Who needs a 40% pension at 43 when they can make 300k plus bonus & stock options each year starting at 35?!

My husband is getting out with 10 years in (we've got about 3 years to go). He doesn't want to turn into the jaded asshole he sees so many of his chiefs and senior chiefs becoming, and he is also only about a semester and a half away from his bachelors' degree. He'll be able to get a well-paying job with far better benefits and a pension to boot. He's just burned out. We miss being civilians, we miss our family.

Plus, you can't live solely on military retirement. It's not THAT much money, and the benefits I get from my job are far better than Tricare. We don't use the commissary or the exchange all that much, so we wouldn't be missing out on much.

i completely agree. and everyone arguing you can stfu, cause obviously there are some EXTREME circumstances. but for the most part, people are immature & uneducated. i don't think enough people think to the future, they are all about the "now."

not many people in this world have the opportunity to collect TWO retirements and TWO pensions. getting out at 38? another 20 years in another easy government job, and you'll only be 58. STILL wayy young for retirement standards these days!!!

it's a great life. ha.

Well both my parents are retired Senior Chiefs. THey aren't jaded assholes. Sorry the ones you know are. And I realize you can't soley live on that retirment. My parents got out and started a construction company. BUT it is a check you are currently working for.

My husband is getting out with more than 10 years done. Spending every other year away for the next however many years is not worth the retirement. He can get out and go teach. No he won't make any more money than he does now, but he'll be safe, and he'll be home with us every night, and that is what matters to us, not the pension.

Truth be told, you get 100% after 30 years, not 20. So full retirement isnt even a halfway mark at 10 years. And sometimes, enough is enough. Would you rather have a happy husband and start over again at 32 or a miserable husband at 32 who feels like he has no way out of it?

retirement after 20 years??? new york city police, firemen, corrections officers, teachers - just about anyone who works for new york city.

Well good for NYC but my FIL who is a firefighter on the West Coast has been doing it for over 30 years and they've stopped giving pensions unitl you hit 40 years. Screw that!

I got out at 10 years because I got pregnant with triplets. My husband will be getting out with over 11 years next year. we're done. we care about our quality of life. And this lifestyle isn't the quality of life that we want for our family.

Fuck all that noise. If my husband doesn't get commissioned by 2012 (end of his contract) he's getting out and it will be 8 years. We've already seen that the pension and benefits are A JOKE. Enlisted pay is crap, so unless he puts on some brass he's getting out and making a real paycheck and getting a career that doesn't keep him away half the year.

People who get out with 10 years in service do it for their own reasons. Why do you care? Maybe some of them don't want to risk it anymore. Maybe they want to watch their children grow up and spend the rest of their days with their families. Instead of watching bombs drop and comrades killed time and time again.

IF they leave the military and go to a gov't job their mili years count towards retirement-therefore they're not stupid.

I plan on getting out with 9 yrs in. I don't care. It's not worth it to me. 2013 and federal job, here I come!

So all the people that are getting out at 10 yrs why stay in so long if it isnt the lifestyle you wanted or etc of the excuses? Hey if you want to get out then so be it, I am for it, I dont want you serving our country if you dont want too. But seriously why stay in it so long? when you signed it wasnt for a 10 year slot, so what gives. cant say you didnt know how it was after 9/11 cause that was 7 years ago? so why now, why not stick it out for the next 10? and we have gotten out b4 to and unless you live in big cities or have a degree to back up that experiance you think will just walk you onto a job, you are wrong, it isnt as great as you think. Good luck when you guys get out, but I was just wondering why you stayed in so long?
