This week there were a ton of posts I couldn’t let through on the topic of bikinis. Who should wear them, who shouldn’t? You can imagine the kind of derogatory comments about overweight bikini wearers that got these confessions blocked. The topic eventually expanded to all manner of tight and revealing clothing. Do only skinny people have a right to revealing clothes?

Of course not. We can’t dictate what other people wear, unless of course it’s your child. Maybe no one should wear tight and revealing clothes. This debate happened on the mom’s channel, what message do you think it sends to your children if you dress like a skank ho?

Of course to me, it’s just as annoying to hear that I can’t wear xyz because I’m a mom than because I’m overweight. My fashion sense strongly resembles oversized potato sacks. You’re really not likely to catch me in anything other than comfy jeans and a t-shirt. Even so, I really resent hearing what I can and can’t wear based on my age, weight, parental status, ect. But if you think about it, women have been told what to wear based on our roles our entire lives. I was told this weekend that the tankini (full skirt and full top) my toddler wore to the pool was inappropriate because a pedophile might see her. WTF? She’s potty training. Ever try to strip a wet one piece off a toddler doing the potty dance?

I heard a radio show on prostitots once, preteenagers wearing sleazy clothing. On the surface it seems pretty innocent. We as a society have standards of modesty, when people don’t follow them we get offended. But maybe it goes deeper than that. Maybe it’s about control? I mean look at all the breastfeeding in public debates? And how come none of these debates apply to men? Where’s the outrage over men jogging with their shirts off in public parks? Some of them are more developed than I am. They might get a snide remark, but nothing like the judgement and disdain women get for how they dress.

Look at the attitude surrounding several rape cases. “Well, if she hadn’t been wearing that...

So why are we so hell bent on controlling women’s bodies? Where’s the line, and  what factors determine it?
